One great way to get free things (gently used) is to be a member of www.freecycle.org . This is a place where people post things they are no longer using to give to someone that needs that item. This is also a great place to post things you are looking for or things that you want to give away. I actually find this to be better then craigslist when it comes to free (gently used) items.
Speaking of craigslist, it's a great place to find used items that people are selling, and if you are lucky you can haggle for a better price.
